Why I've Fallen in Love with Creating ACEOs

Over the past few months, I've discovered a new artistic passion: creating ACEOs.

If you've never heard of an ACEO before, the term stands for Art Cards, Editions and Originals. These miniature works of art are always created in a standard size of 2.5 x 3.5 inches, about the size of a trading card. Despite their small dimensions, ACEOs have become a beloved and highly collectable art form around the world.

What initially drew me to ACEOs was the challenge. Creating a piece of artwork on such a small scale requires a different way of thinking. Every brushstroke matters. Every detail has to earn its place. Yet within those tiny dimensions lies an opportunity to capture a complete story, mood, or moment.

Tiny Paintings, Big Stories

Many of my ACEOs are inspired by the things I love most: woodland walks, changing seasons, magical skies, wildlife, and the quiet beauty found in nature.

One day I might paint a misty November woodland fading into the distance. The next, a glowing Halloween moon with bats soaring across the sky. Sometimes inspiration comes from real-life encounters, like the bumblebee I rescued with sugar water before creating a painting in its honour.

Each ACEO becomes a miniature world of its own.

What I love most is that these little artworks encourage me to focus on atmosphere and storytelling. Whether it's autumn leaves drifting gently to the ground, a solitary lamppost glowing against the darkness, or a vibrant pumpkin patch bursting with personality, every piece is designed to evoke emotion and spark imagination.

Why Are ACEOs So Popular?

Part of the appeal is their collectability.

Because ACEOs are a standard size, collectors can easily display, store, and build collections around themes they love. Some collect wildlife ACEOs, others focus on fantasy art, seasonal scenes, landscapes, or botanical subjects.

Their small size also makes them wonderfully approachable. Collectors can enjoy original artwork without needing large wall spaces, and many appreciate the excitement of discovering new artists and adding unique pieces to their collections.

For artists, ACEOs provide an opportunity to experiment with new ideas, explore different subjects, and create affordable original artwork.

Original Art Made Affordable

One of the things I love most about ACEOs is that they make original art more accessible.

Not everyone has the budget or space for larger paintings, but many people still want to own a genuine hand-painted original. ACEOs offer that opportunity.

Each ACEO I create is a one-of-a-kind piece of artwork. There are no prints, no reproductions, and no duplicates. The collector receives the original painting itself, complete with the textures, colours, and tiny details that make handmade art special.

For many people, ACEOs are an affordable way to start an art collection. For others, they are treasured additions to collections that have been growing for years.

A New Creative Adventure

Creating ACEOs has reignited my love of painting in unexpected ways. Their size encourages experimentation, spontaneity, and creativity while still allowing me to tell the stories that inspire my work.

From autumn woodlands and moonlit skies to bees, wildflowers, and magical landscapes, each ACEO represents a small piece of the natural world as I see it.

They're tiny treasures, but they're filled with heart.

And I can't wait to create many more.

🍂✨

Thank you for joining me on this ACEO adventure. I'd love to know which themes you'd like to see next in my miniature collection!
