🌿 Behind the Brush – My Creative Process From Start to Finish

Every hand‑painted piece begins long before the first brushstroke touches the wood. For me, the magic lies in the journey — the quiet moments of imagining, planning, layering, and bringing a story to life. In this post, I’m taking you behind the scenes to show you how each One of a Kind Creations piece is made, from the very first spark of inspiration to the final protective finish.

✨ 1. Finding the Perfect Vintage Piece

I always start with a piece that has character — something with charm, curves, or details that deserve a second life. Vintage furniture carries history, and I love honouring that by transforming it into something new, meaningful, and magical.

Sometimes I know exactly what I want to paint the moment I see it. Other times, the piece tells me what it wants to become.

🎨 2. Preparing the Canvas

Before the artistry begins, there’s a lot of careful prep:

- cleaning and degreasing

- sanding to smooth and reveal the grain

- repairing any little quirks

- priming to create the perfect base

This stage is all about respect — giving the furniture the foundation it needs to shine again.

🌸 3. Choosing Colours That Tell a Story

Colour is emotion. Soft greens for woodland calm. Warm pinks for nostalgia. Deep blues for storybook magic.

I choose colours that complement the artwork I’m planning, but also the personality of the piece itself. Every shade is intentional.

🖌️ 4. Sketching & Painting the Artwork

This is where the heart of the process begins.

I sketch lightly, letting the design grow naturally. Whether it’s a fox sunning himself in the forest, Alice chasing the White Rabbit, or delicate florals flowing across a drawer front, each detail is painted by hand with patience and care.

This stage takes hours — sometimes days — but it’s my favourite part. It’s where the piece comes alive.

🌿 5. Adding the Finishing Touches

Once the artwork is complete, I bring everything together:

- lining drawers with beautiful papers

- painting or replacing hardware

- adding moulds or gold accents

- blending colours for depth and softness

These little touches make the piece feel complete, cohesive, and truly one of a kind.

✨ 6. Sealing for Protection

Every piece is sealed with wax or topcoat to protect the artwork and ensure it lasts for years to come. It’s the final step — the moment the piece is ready to go out into the world and become part of someone’s home.

đź’› Why This Process Matters

Hand‑painted furniture isn’t just about the finished look. It’s about the journey — the care, the creativity, the hours of quiet focus. It’s about turning something forgotten into something treasured.

Every piece I create carries a story, and I’m honoured each time someone chooses to make that story part of their home.
